I’ve never actually read any Pratchett. What would you recommend? That sounds like a good read for xmas travels.

Well, as a one-off non-Discworld that is simply wonderful, I’d read Pratchett and Gaiman’s Good Omens. Otherwise, I’d find an early Discworld book with either the Ankh-Morpork Guard, like Guards! Guards! or the Witches, like Wyrd Sisters — even though in that case, Equal Rites comes first — (or maybe Mort, Small Gods or Pyramids, the first of which is kind of a Death book; the others are more one-offish, but related to the rest). LDW would say Guards! Guards! as the best introduction to the Discworld.

aiiii….I’m practically crying at my computer. Seriously tragic. Introduction to Discworld–do NOT start with the first one. I tried that and it took me a decade to go back. Do not start with anything that features Rincewind or wizards (unless slapstick is your thing). Definitely something with either the Guards or Death. The witches are fine to start with. I’d recommend Mort, and Guards! Guards! too. Some of the more recent ones–Monstrous Regiment, Going Postal–are a little less laugh-out-loud funny but introduce new main characters and maybe offer a bit more to chew on.I quote Pratchett in my classes, occasionally–perhaps I’ll do a post “Terry Prachett on History” in his honor. I should write a fan letter while I can.
