How cold is too cold to take a walk?

It’s about 25° F, -4° C right now, with 10-15 mph winds. So kind of cold. But gorgeous. I don’t own a hat. At what point is it too cold to go for a walk?

Take a short walk, and turn around when your ears start to hurt (before they hurt with an insistent, bitter ache). And don’t wear earrings.Or: you could wrap a scarf around your head. It’s a shame to miss beautiful weather.

I’d say at those temps without wind, no problem. With wind, you’ll definitely want to wrap a scarf around your ears. Put the middle of the scarf over the top of your head, and pull the sides down to wrap under your chin and around your neck. Done loosely, I always found that more effective and less hair-mussing than a hat, anyway.

Heh, if it’s below about 60 or so I usually need something covering my ears, if I walk for an hour. It’s that insistent, bitter ache that meg refers to that gets me.But then, I don’t own any hats – I prefer scarves/hoods.

Oh, and I meant to add that I am very amused at the different answers from me and P/H. ;-)I also like to wear tights under my pants at that temp (if you’re walking for a while), because my legs get cold, and then when I come back inside, they turn all bright red and itchy. But you may not have that problem!

Nope — but I avoid the tights issue by wearing long silk underwear if it’s that cold. I only wear them if I’m going to be standing around, though.

You should be fine! As long as you’ve got tights/long johns and a scarf anything up to -20° C is OK.New Kid, I think you may have been away from New England for too long, you’re going all soft and southern 😉
